Originally cultivated in ancient Egypt, peppermint was also used in Greece and Rome as an herbal medicine, as well as for flavoring food. The name "mint" comes from a Greek myth in which Hades, the god of the dead, seduced Minthe, a nymph. Hades's wife Persephone, enraged, turned Minthe into a plant that people would walk on. In the end, Hades, as a way to honor Minthe, interfered so that the mint plan would release an enticing aroma when walked on.
Typically used to help with digestion and act as a palate cleanser after meals, peppermint not only is delightful to taste, but has many functional benefits across many ancient cultures. Many people drink it for a natural energy boost (without caffeine!) to get a bit more pep in your step!
